Rappa Roy & Full Stop Dot Com directed by Dhiman Barman
Rappa Roy & Full Stop Dot Com marks an ambitious and refreshing entry into contemporary Bengali cinema, blending comic-book sensibilities with grounded storytelling. Directed and produced by debutant filmmaker Dhiman Barman, the film follows Rappa Roy—a young cartoonist-cum-journalist who inadvertently exposes a dangerous criminal network. What begins as a passion for documenting real-life incidents soon spirals into a high-stakes confrontation involving the ruthless gang “Full Stop Dot Com” and the kidnapping of rising actress Dolphin Ganguly.
The film’s strength lies in its rooted protagonist. Unlike traditional superheroes, Rappa is an ordinary middle-class youth navigating extraordinary circumstances with courage and wit. This grounded approach, inspired partly by adaptations like Spider-Man (or Tintin), brings relatability while maintaining cinematic flair. The casting reflects this vision—Arpan Ghoshal as Rappa and Alivia Sarkar as Dolphin introduce freshness, aligning with the director’s intent to balance authenticity with novelty.
The filmmaking journey, however, was far from easy. As a first-time producer-director, Dhiman Barman navigated dual responsibilities—managing budgets while shaping the creative vision. He describes filmmaking as a continuous problem-solving exercise, where adaptability becomes crucial amid unpredictable shooting conditions. From dense jungle shoots in Bishnupur to extended indoor schedules, the project demanded resilience and quick decision-making.
A significant creative challenge was adapting the comic universe of Sujog Bandyopadhyay into a cinematic format. While the graphic novel offered a visual blueprint, translating its tone, humor, and characters into film required reinterpretation. The team aimed to retain the spirit of the source while introducing a modern, urban aesthetic to appeal to newer audiences.
Despite its challenges, the film has already achieved recognition, being selected for the Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival 2026—a milestone that underscores its growing impact. With a sequel already in development, Rappa Roy & Full Stop Dot Com signals the beginning of a promising franchise that seeks to redefine Bengali genre cinema.
