Memory Frame directed by SWAPNILA BHOWMICK
Memory Frame is a character-driven film that explores memory, identity, and the quiet fragility of human connection. It follows Prayag Lahiri, a struggling screenplay artist who, faced with his mother’s early-onset Alzheimer’s and fading recognition, attempts to recreate her life through cinema to return her lost memories. Built through the collective effort of a closely-knit team that has collaborated across multiple projects, the film reflects a strong sense of trust, adaptability, and shared vision, with members often taking on multiple roles to bring the story to life. Directed by Swapnila Bhowmick, alongside assistant director Sheetal Priya, the project blends emotional realism with thoughtful storytelling, emerging as both a cinematic exploration of loss and a testament to teamwork and perseverance.
Driven by a personal connection to Alzheimer’s within her own family, the director approached the subject with sensitivity and authenticity. What began as an idea rooted in observation gradually evolved into a structured narrative, balancing emotional depth with the practical constraints of student filmmaking.
The project was brought to life by a passionate and close-knit team. Many members of the crew, including the director and assistant director Sheetal Priya, have collaborated on multiple projects over the years, often taking on multiple roles such as writing, cinematography, editing, and even acting. Their shared journey began with small experimental films and led to winning their first interschool competition with a short film on schizophrenia, laying the foundation for this ambitious project.
Like many independent productions, the journey was not without challenges. Managing time alongside academic commitments as board exam candidates, coordinating schedules for cast and crew, and navigating occasional creative disagreements tested the team’s resilience. However, completing the film as envisioned and executing the editing process successfully stood as a significant achievement.
Memory Frame is not only a story about loss and remembrance but also a reflection of growth, collaboration, and perseverance. The experience reaffirmed a simple yet powerful lesson: patience brings the best results.
