Synopsis

Sophia is a film/theatre hybrid filmed in just eight hours during a single day, on the empty Studio One stage of London's acclaimed Arcola theatre, during the height of the UK's Covid pandemic when all United Kingdom theatres were closed. Sophia tells the story of Sophia Duleep Singh, an Asian suffragette, who through a strange twist of fate was also the goddaughter of Queen Victoria. The film looks at the formative events of her life, including the theft of her father's empire by the British Raj. Events which eventually led her to deciding to fight for the rights of all women. With voting rights currently under threat in many states throughout America, as well as the very rights of all women (including trans women) now targeted by the far right, our film points to the fact that what is given can so very easily be taken away.
